Beginner: - Has a website for 0-2 years (1 year and 7 months I think) Average: - Has been dolling for 3+ years (I think my fourth dolling anniversary is at the end of October this year) - Does her best on details (patterns and gradients FTW! XD ) - Knows how lighting should fall on clothes and uses it in a good way (don't know if I use it the right way, but I try to incorporate it in my dolls) - Knows how to make good folds and know how they are formed. (I wouldn't always call them good, but they are pretty decent) - Knows how to make a good patterns (seeing as I'm pretty addicted to them, especially multicolour ones) - Knows that clothes do have seams! (I know that -I'm currently even sewing clothes- and do keep them in mind most of the time, though I don't always pixel them: side seams etc. aren't often noticeable) - Does nice backgrounds (I do them and people say they are nice, so...) - Has a site in HTML or at least a whole pixeled layout (don't know what you see as a pixeled layout, but my banner is pixeled and the whole thing is coded in strict HTML and CSS) - Knows what frankendolling is. (knew that before I started dolling: I'm one of those people who is pretty neurotic -or 'spastisch' as people say here- when it comes to checking rules) - Knows the primary dolling rules (see frankendolling point) - Uses own palettes (I love playing with colours and sometimes don't even make palettes, but chose the colours as I doll) - Links back as you should do (as far as I know, yes) Experienced: - Is getting better and better (I like to think I get better over time) - Makes challenges for his/her self (wacky gradients, patterns, backgrounds, baseless dolls, giant portraits... I think those can count as challenges ^^) - Does big dolls and big backgrounds with lots of details (depends on what you call big though) - Does a lot with details. (I try incorporating them, depends on whether it fits with the doll though) - Doesn't need palettes and creates them while working on the doll (see the palette point in the 'average' section -if I make a palette before starting to work on the doll, I always end up changing it a lot, so it doesn't quite matter) - Has fans of her dolls and pixels (not many, but there are some people crazy enough to be fans of my dolls) - Has a positive attitude against comments AND critics!! (I love getting CC, it makes me improve lots ^^) - Is known not just in their country but also others. (Eh, since I'm mostly a member of the English-speaking community, most people that know me are from other countries. I don't think a lot of Belgian dollers know me, nor do I know a lot of Belgian dollers ^^ I'm average as well I'm such a conformist, oh noes! XD But on the positive side: being average also means that it's less likely that my dolls get frankendolled, that I get flamed on my site and all that jazz ^^ I don't believe that the website has anything to do with the level of dolling either. I waited till my dolls were a bit decent before making my site, so I go in the beginner category for that one. I don't use Javascript because I'm more of a simple site fan and haven't seen much good use of Javascript on dolling sites either (and if there is -useless- Javascript I sometimes turn it off to see if their site still looks/works so good without it... yeah, I'm evil like that ). And I haven't made any huge pixeled layouts because some of my visitors still use a 800x600 resolution and I'd rather have a simple layout and content visitors than an elaborate layout and frustrated visitors who have to scroll all the time ^^ I must also say that I've seen quite a few dollers who doll for more than f.i. eight years (or even ten years for that matter) whose dolls look like the ones I made when I was dolling for two years... So the time dolling doesn't always mean a lot :/ But of course, some of these dollers rarely ask for critiques...

I totally agree with Brennie, this is all about having fun, it's also about being good at something, showing other people that and hoping that people give you credit, and win awards at contests which make you feel good about yourselves. also you make alot of new friends, like me and seira, at msn we talk about alot more than just pixelstuff and we became the best friends.
I don't like putting a label on ourselves, (beginner, average, experienced) because, just like Brennie said: There should be a box for everyone.
Everyone has his own way of being good, and I think it's not fair to categorize everyone in 'their' box.

don't mess with me all XD
this is just ment to show beginners just why they are not average or such... which you see A LOT on new starting dollpages.
I hate it when they say your average or WHATEVER and dolls look like they are.. well... not that good...
I can say one thing for sure... there is always someone that is better! always and for everyone.. it's mostly a ego thing to say that you are sooo goood. the thing that for me makes you a good doller is continuing learling and trying to be better and get better ^^ then you take this hobby serious XD

Based on time and website experience I count as a beginner, but I have made serious effort to understand the community and improve my work to a level closer to average.

I know that. It's just daunting at times.
But it's worth it for the moments when you look at something you made and think "That is so COOL."

but... I wanna say something. I've seen people that weren't dolling for a long time, but still were better then a lot of 'seniors'. same goes for non-html websites, and people that aren't known anywhere... those thing seem a bit unlogic to me... just a tiny bit... It's not that I hate thie thing. of course not... but it's just.. there are a lot of exceptions to those things. got it memorized? (god, I need to stop playing KH2 so much...)

it's just to show a guid of how you can inprove and look further. you don't need to have all things it's just to show also some people that it's pointless because some one will be better always you need to keep chalanging yourself XD blablabla

i think there are people who are clearly beginners and people who are clearly experienced. the others are average.. this way some people might say someone is average, others say he/she is still beginner/experienced...
however, if you use pillowshading or anything like that, you can't call yourself average >_>

I agree with all of you. Veerle stop playing Kingdom Hearts 2 . u sound like that red dude in the black coat I'm playing everyday too -.-'' it's so annoying lolz You got a point , if you compare with dolls from a average and expert, you might see things that are better in the average doll but also things in the expert one. Seira is also right, and after all is this just a little quiz thingy. It can be right but also wrong. Gittiej has also a point. If you look at how others make their dolls and stuuf and look at your work you can compare it.Not only in shadows but also in the design, you see many beginning dollers making casual dolls and a bit more experienced dollers make more complicated designs like Fantasy and stuff. ok I'm done now ;D

And I know what you mean... I had a friend who made some really blank-shaded dolls for the RP we were in. I was reading through this at the time and we were discussing the dolls, and... well, here's a link. It's easier to show than tell. I'm Pendulumwriter, by the way. www.twilightsucks.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=9712&start=250 I hope it's alright to link?...
